Playoffs Underway

Orange 5  Yellow 4

A couple fall league season’s ago, orange goalie, Clint, found himself playing on a #1 seeded team going into the playoffs, only to lose twice in a 3 week span to the #6 seeded team.   He made sure that didn’t happen again, but it took all 45 minutes and a big 2nd period to help get past the yellow team last night.   Yellow has yet to find the win column since the league began back in September but 5 of their games have been decided by a goal.  Vinnie got the scoring started last night when he scored about 6 minutes into the game, but orange answered roughly 4 minutes later when Rob Reed scored on a nice set up from Joe Roush.  The game would remain tied until Ben Rossi scored the first of his 2 goals on the night to give yellow a 2-1 lead going into the 2nd period.  Orange was playing without Zac Gray (injury).  They tried to make up some of that lost speed by picking up Laken Dodd.  She also filled in for Red last night (Steve Pompeii was out due to illness).  Yellow stretched the lead to 3-1 early in the 2nd period on a goal from Brice Miller but that’s when Orange answered with 4 consecutive goals to set the tone for the rest of the game.  Alex Waddell scored on a long shot that yellow goalie Adam McKinley got screened on enough for him not to see the shot go past him.  Jason Stamler continues to play well as he added two, 2nd period goals for orange and John Matchock added the other goal for orange in that 2nd period stretch.  The game would remain 5-3 until Ben Rossi scored about 9 minutes into the 3rd period to cut the lead to 5-4 but yellow was not able to get the tying goal despite some good chances late in the game.   Normally, these 2 teams would meet again next week, but to try to give teams a chance to play against different teams, we decided to change things up by having orange play against the lowest seeded loser from last night (which was #4 seeded black).  Red upset Sky Blue last night which means Orange gets to play Black next week at 820.  Yellow will go up against Sky Blue in an elimination game next week at 620.

Gray 9  Black 5

In recent weeks, team gray has had to overcome some early multiple goal 1st period deficits, but they made sure that was not the case last night.  Their biggest problem was getting people to show up on time last night.  While they started the game out ironman, they got a boost when Cory Schuckers and Trent Bembenic showed up.  Zach Smith got the scoring started, but Phil Pompeii answered for black to tie the game at 1.  After that, Bob Anderson took the 1st period over by scoring twice and setting Brian Anderson up for another to give Gray a 4-1 lead.  Zach Foradori (filling in for Corey Bassett) cut the lead to 4-2 but gray would end up scoring the next 4 goals to put the game out of reach.  Cory Schuckers and Zach Smith led the charge in that stretch.  Andy scored early in the 3rd period for black and Laken scored 2 late goals, but gray had a comfortable enough lead by that point.  Unfortunately for black, Andy was not feeling well and did not want have enough energy to leave the rink right away after his game was over last night.  John Matchock may have played himself out a little bit in his skate out role for orange in the previous game.  Orange did not clinch a win until the final second went off the clock last night.  Gray will go up against Red next week at 720 while Black will have to win against Orange to avoid elimination.

Red 5  Sky Blue 3

In Terms of seeding, this was considered a little bit of an upset, but any team with Henry and Noah always has a chance to win.  Red won last night despite no goals from Noah, but he made his presence known in other ways.   Sky Blue goalie Bubba did not get full possession of the ball off a long shot midway thru the 3rd period last night with the ball finding its way to Noah.  What looked like a go ahead goal from Noah somehow did not find its way into the net which temporarily left the game tied at 3.  While he has not been talked about much, its safe to say that Troy Gaydosh has had a good showing for Red in this league.  He has been asked to play a bigger role with Jeff Wehner not showing up for any games this season and has delivered.   Goals for hard to come by for both teams last night, but Gaydosh found a way to score 3 times, including the one that sealed the game late in the 3rd period with Red trying to hang onto their 4-3 lead at the time.  Laken Dodd scored the 2nd of her two goals just before that to give Red a 4-3 lead.    Laken played her 3rd game of the night (filled in for Steve Pompeii) and contributed to the win for red.  Sky Blue tied the game at 3 early in the 3rd period on a nice slap shot from Cody Schuckers but Henry Sutter made it tough for Blue to score throughout the night.  Cody Haag added a 2nd period goal for Sky Blue while Tyler Stitt had a first period goal.  This game was low scoring and tight the whole way.  Sky Blue will have to beat Yellow next week to keep its season going.

Schedule for next week:  December 9th

Yellow vs Sky Blue at 620

Red vs Gray at 720

Black vs Orange at 820

Jason Stamler (Orange)

1. 5-4 win over yellow. What can you say about the overall team effort in the win? The team effort was great last night.

 2. Yellow did not win a game all season but gave you guys (and girl) everything you could handle last night. Were you surprised at all? No they have a really good team. They have one of the best goalie. They also have the scorers and defense to win.

3. You scored 2 big goals in the 2nd period. Is it safe to say that you are playing with a lot of confidence right now? Yes I’m playing with a lot of confidence.

4. No Zac Gray. How do you think the rest of the team trying to fill his void? They are doing a good job of filling that void

 5. Rumor has you going to the Knights this season. Is that true?   Yes, its true

Brice Miller (Yellow)

1. 5-4 loss to orange last night. What can you say about the overall team effort? We played a good game for all but one stretch. Just couldn’t finish.

2. Orange scored 4 unanswered goals in the 2nd period. What do you think went wrong in that stretch? Not putting pressure on and letting them carry possession throughout our defensive zone

3. They were playing without Zac Gray. Do you consider this game a missed opportunity or were you happy to take a top seed down to the wire like you guys did? . Yeah definitely an opportunity missed in my opinion.

4. What positives can you take out of the game going into next week against sky blue? . Another close game that could have went our way. The majority of our games have came down to the wire or been overtime losses.

5. NFL is in its final stretch. Got any bold predictions for the rest of the season and playoffs?  I have a feeling the Steelers will be dropping a few games to the point they either barely win the division or fall to a wild card spot. Some tough games coming up, but if the offense keeps clicking, it could be an exciting run.

Cody Haag (Sky Blue)

1. 5-3 loss to red last night. What can you say about the overall team effort in the loss? Overall team effort was there. We were right there all night and had a close game

2. The game was tight the whole way with goal scoring at a minimum. Do you like playing in those kind of games? It is definitely more engaging playing in close games and keeps everyone on their toes!

3. Henry had one of his nights in net last night. How big of a factor do you think he was in your team losing last night?  I would say Henry was a huge factor. We could of have had more chances but he was stopping everything and keeping the rebounds away from us. We had a couple sneak through that ended up not going in so that could change the game as well.

 4. You will get to play yellow next week. You have blown them out twice this season, but are you expecting a better game this time around? If they have their full team there I will be expecting a closer game.

5. You wont be playing xhl this season, do you think you will miss it at all or are you looking forward to a little bit of a break from it? . I definitely enjoy playing but with having two little ones at home it will be nice to have an extra day with them. They are only this young once!

Troy Gaydosh (Red)

1. 5-3 win over blue last night. What can you say about the overall team effort? Team effort has been great the past few weeks. Everyone's playing a part and contributing. We're much better than the first few games of the season surprisingly.

 2. You scored 3 goals, including a big one in the 3rd period. Whats it been like playing on this team (considering you have had to play with a lot of different faces each week)? Our team kinda relies on Noah and I to put pucks in the net while everyone else, has stepped up and made good solid defensive plays.

3. How do you think Henry did in net last night?  Henry has definitely been on his game the past few weeks often always making the initial save.

 4. What was your impression of the opponent last night and what kind of game were you expecting going into it? funny question. When I drove home last night I got the impression that both the Schuckers and Amick were frustrated from Noah and I pressuring them and struggling to advance the puck. It says a lot when you can hold a team with those 3 guys to just 3 goals. We definitely owed them one after losing in OT to them a few weeks ago.

5. Got any predictions for the rest of the NFL season? I think we're headed for Eagles at Lions NFC championship game for sure. In the AFC I'm surprised to see the Steelers now with a comfortable lead ahead of the Ravens. Bills are definitely the better team despite being a game back of the Chiefs still. All that could change in the next month though.
